Across the strait of Gibraltar sits a small “secret” city that seems to remain unknown to even the most seasoned of travelers—Ceuta. Although it’s part of Spain, it’s actually a part of the African continent. Ceuta, which gained autonomy in 1995, is one of 9 Spanish-controlled areas of Africa. The city makes a lovely little side trip if you are visiting Spain or Morocco and want a place with a different view that’s unique and inexpensive. To get there, book a ferry from Algeciras or go by land via Morocco. Several ferries run each day. With 3-star hotels around averaging CA $50/night and 5-star hotels available at about $140 (try the highly praised Ulises), Ceuta is a relatively inexpensive and definitely worthwhile place to visit.

Summer visitors should be sure to check out the beautiful grounds of the Parque Maritimo del Mediterraneo. The park consists of a huge leisure complex and park complete with three salt water artificial lakes for swimming, as well as waterfalls, gardens, leisure areas and entertainment. This is also a center point for the city’s entertainment, food and leisure. Next, stop by the not-to-be-missed eclectic 1905 Casa de los Dragone in Kings Square to marvel at the exquisite architecture. The fortified medieval Royal Walls around the old part of Ceuta are as old as the 5th century. Visitors should also check out the stunning art at the Museo de los Muralles Reales inside the walls.

Visitors should be sure to take advantage of Ceuta’s special taxation systems: shopping for goods here can be much cheaper than shopping in the rest of Spain. Browse through jewelers and perfume shops in the Calle Real, a lovely pedestrian walkway that walks visitors through the most interesting and historical parts of town. The Central Market is the perfect place to check out the local catch-of-the day. For dining, several authentic and highly-rated restaurants, ranging from Moroccan to Spanish flavors, exist through the city center. Visitors should try some local Ceuti cuisine like the trenzas de Agustina. Drop into the Mesón el Cortijo to sample some tapas with beer, or try local delicacies like swordfish and rice mariniere at the Parador’s restaurant.
