Prague. It even sounds pretty saying it.

Known as “the city of a Hundred Spires,” the capitol of the Czech Republic is a colorful enclave of beautiful baroque buildings, a medieval astronomical clock, and mesmerizing rows of Gothic churches reflecting the diverse groups ruling it since its founding in 885 AD.

Steeped in culture, intrigue, and history, Prague offers visitors a plethora of historic sites and rich European architectural wonders. Perfect for romantic getaways and peaceful historic tours, visitors are charmed by this Czech city.

Situated on nine hills along the Vltava River, Prague is home to lush greenery and sprawling parks to traverse. And, with the help of this list of highlights, you won’t miss anything important.

Abundant Art and Architecture

Prague abounds with pre-war buildings featuring elegant architectural detail common to European cities. Many incorporate artistic designs and artwork such as facade sculptures that make many buildings seem to be works of art. Be sure to get a view of the Nationale-Nederlanden building, an office building nicknamed, the Prague Dancing House, and commonly referred to as “The Fred & Ginger House.”

Prague is known for its abundance of public art; some symbolic, some contemporary and others, abstract. And, some date back to the communist era.

An Affordable Destination and a City Under Renaissance

Those who have visited Prague comment on its affordability and resonating charm which is reflected in its cobblestone streets and unique medieval houses. And, although the area suffered greatly during communist rule, a renaissance is taking place in the lovely city complete with a restoration of its original elegance.

The vibe of the city has shifted to an air of urban renewal, vibrant freedom and contagious artistic expression to the delight of both residents and travelers. A great example of modern Prague is John Lennon’s Freedom Wall. Toward Communism’s end in the 1980s, students began writing John Lennon lyrics on the wall to voice their grievances. The wall has become an homage to love and peace and people are permitted to write and paint on it.

Prague is a quaint, walkable city leading to great sites in the historic center of its Old Town Square featuring the city’s biggest draw, the Astronomical clock. Each hour, crowds gather to hear it’s ancient bell toll.
