Imagine holding a fluffy koala bear and an ominous crocodile or, getting the rare chance to stroke the soft fur of a real, live kangaroo. These are just some of the amazing wonders we experienced at Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures. And, the small and intimate venue was ideal for getting an up-close experience with nature in all its beauty. It’s truly worth the trip.
Walking along the Cassowary walk, there was a unique an opportunity to gaze upon those majestic birds of the rainforest traversing the lush pathways of their habitat. Taking a moment to listen for the cassowary’s low rumble as they called out to each other was quite wondrous.
Be sure to take one of the relaxing boat rides on Hartley’s Lagoon and explore the crocodile swamp where you can watch peaceful birds and other local wildlife while cruising along the still waters.
Part of the fun was watching some of the entertaining and informative wildlife presentations showing things like the fascinating feeding time of a bunch of Estuarine crocodiles being hand-fed. Listening to their keeper, we learned about their evolution and environmental importance along with facts about native freshwater crocs.
A visit to Hartley’s Crocodile Farm was a rare glimpse into the sustainable commercial production of crocodile products and the part they play in the conservation of these amazing animals and their habitat.
Another exciting presentation showed some of the area’s stunning snakes and explained interesting facts about how to behave in their presence and what to do in the event of a snake bite. And, for a great souvenir to take with you when you go, you can have your photo taken while you hold a python or crocodile and get a digital photo print or CD to show your friends and family!
The interactive, afternoon feeding of Hartley’s wallaby’s and kangaroos was a highlight of the experience. Helping their keepers feed the animals and watching them respond to their special treat was a joy to be a part of.
Hartley’s was a pleasant drive up the coast and only 40 kilometers north of Cairns along the scenic Douglas Cook Highway. And, a two-thumbs-up experience!
