It’s so private that cameras are restricted on shore excursions but that only seems to add to the mystique of the island of Mustique in the Grenadines.

Privately owned, the 115-acre island is overseen by a company held by the 500 full-time residents. Situated just a hundred miles west of Barbados, the island of Mustique sits in the stream of islands of St. Vincent and the Grenadines in the Caribbean.

The island’s mild year-round climate and boundless beauty of picturesque hilltops, rocky headlands and palm-fringed pristine beaches is coupled with one of the most exclusive collection of villas in the world. A stay on Mustique is a genuinely unique destination providing the feeling of being on your very own private island.

Notable Notes

A standout from many places in the Caribbean, Mustique is known for its exceptional cleanliness. Taxi seats are covered in plastic and recycling is highly encouraged on the island.

Because the population is so controlled, crime is practically non-existent and a great disparity from other places in the Caribbean which deal with a higher crime rate.

Places that aren’t marine parks in the Caribbean don’t charge for boat anchoring, but on Mustique, there is a $75/200 EC charge to drop anchor in Britannia Bay for a three-night stay.

Things to See and Do

Just part of the island’s popularity is due to its great cuisine and musical entertainment featured in its clubs including Basil’s Bar which has an international reputation resulting from visits from homeowners like Mike Jagger and travelers like Eric Clapton and Sir Paul McCartney. Situated on the water overlooking Britannia Bay, Basil’s offers stunning sunset views.

Mustique is home to many clean, well-stocked markets such as Stanley’s, a stellar outdoor fruit and vegetable vendor offering fine wines, spirits and elegant items such as foie gras.

The Fishmonger market, in a rustic building by the bay, is the perfect place to purchase fresh fish and watch fisherman preparing their catch.

Called the most famous of Mustique’s beaches, Macaroni Beach is renowned for its huge waves and body surfing. The lagoon on the Caribbean side is more secluded making it perfect for families with small children.

A Cocktail Party is hosted religiously every Tuesday night by the Mustique Company in the Great Room of the Cotton House Hotel. Dress is casual and all guests to the island are welcome.
