Sedona, Arizona: Landscape That’s Larger Than Life

Travelers to the city of Sedona are drawn to the area for its panoramic views, magnificent red rock buttes, mesas and hoodoos dotting the landscape as far as the eye can see. Known as “Red Rock Country,” Sedona and the surrounding area is littered with scenic attractions and a sixteen-mile Oak Creek Canyon that are easily accessible and offer great photo opportunities.

Hikers flood to the area and take in the natural wonders on foot and the National Forest Service offers detailed maps for trekking around the rock formations. Several jeep tour companies take visitors to see the top sites and Sedona’s backcountry. Two of the best are Pink Jeep Tours and Sedona Red Rock Jeep Tours.

Sedona has a growing reputation for it’s fine cuisine and L’Auberge is among the best. Featuring a genuine French setting, the venue is known for dishes like tiger shrimp with lime mayonnaise and their venison loin in a vinegar and black currant sauce.

The Hideaway Restaurant County Square gives travelers an authentic Western experience and features a roomy outdoor deck offering views of Oak Creek and its rugged red rocks.
Find contemporary dishes like rosemary chicken, crab cakes, and seared ruby-red ahi at Shugrue’s Hillside Grill or try one of their popular plates of meat loaf or the bubbly chicken pot pies.

Charming and cozy accommodations are abundant in Sedona and many visitors flock to Garland’s Oak Creek Lodge. Guests can relax in the evenings on the porches of their well-appointed cabins. The Lodge has even attracted celebrities like Martha Stewart who used the venue for a photo shoot.

Another great place to stay is the Bed & Breakfast at Saddlerock Ranch. Situated on the slopes of Airport Mesa, the three-room retreat was built with local flagstone floors, timber-beamed ceilings, and walls made from red rock and adobe. Filled with vintage Western charm and a nice sampling of glamour, the B&B is a great venue to experience local architecture at its best.

Canyon Villa Inn is another popular option with its glorious views of the massive Bell Rock and Courthouse Butte formations and plenty of windows for taking in the scenery. The 220-room pueblo-style resort is surrounded by the Coconino National Forest. The Villa features an excellent tennis facility and full-service spa.
