Aswan, Egypt

Aswan captivates visitors with its laid-back Nubian charm and stunning Nile vistas. Must-do activities include exploring the colossal High Dam, visiting the Temple of Philae (rescued from flooding and rebuilt on Agilkia Island), and wandering through the vibrant Nubian Museum to understand the region’s rich history. For an authentic cultural experience, take a ferry to the Nubian villages on Elephantine Island, where locals welcome visitors into their homes for traditional meals and henna tattoos. Don’t miss the local markets to shop for spices and souvenirs.

The Old Cataract Hotel remains Aswan’s crown jewel, a Victorian-era palace that’s been hosting the world’s elite since 1899. Agatha Christie wrote portions of “Death on the Nile” in room 1201, and the hotel’s terraces offer Egypt’s most spectacular sunset views. While rooms start around $900 per night, you can experience its colonial grandeur by visiting the legendary 1902 bar – there’s typically a minimum charge of  about $25 per person for drinks and appetizers. The bar’s dress code is smart casual, and advance reservations are recommended, especially during high season. The drinks are very expensive.

For a quintessential Nile experience, head to the Aswan corniche where local captains line up their feluccas (traditional sailboats) for hire. A two-hour sunset cruise costs about 200-300 Egyptian pounds ($6-10) per person, though prices can vary based on season and group size. Skip the touts and negotiate directly with boat captains – most feluccas accommodate 6-8 passengers comfortably. The best trips include sailing around Elephantine Island and past the Botanical Gardens on Kitchener’s Island. Bring your own snacks and drinks, and always agree on the exact duration and route before departing.
